I just saw Watchmen and... I'm not sure how I feel about it.

I think Moore was right, I think comics are the best story telling platform for this story.

It's not like like I think the movie blew chunks, there were so many things that I loved about it. Haley’s Rorschach, Crudup’s Dr. Manhattan, and Morgan’s Comedian were absolutely amazing performances and I pretty much adored every scene they were in. The special effect blew my mind, it was all so gorgeous. Mars alone just as visually awe inspiring as I'd hoped it would be when I read it in the comic. It honestly was an incredible movie and if I had never read/heard about the book I would have loved it to pieces.

* The music score, my GOD that god awful music score. "Flight of the Valkyries"? Snyder, did your mother drop you? "Hallelujah"? At what point while your were reading the comic did THAT pop into your brain, cause it sure as fuck never entered my mind. One I could have easily overlooked, but there were several made me wonder what Snyder was smoking.

* Maybe it's because I read the comic, but Ozymandias might as well have been wearing a sign that said "Why yes I am the villain. :)" Rorschach out of costume was obvious as sin too. But again, it may be due to me having read the book.

* A good handful of the scenes lasted much longer than truly necessary. The Comedian took for-fucking-ever to die, but you can't take the time to properly explain Keene act? Hollis's murder got cut, but the sex scenes can go on and on and on? Ugh.

* Lot of slo-mo gore for no proper reason other than it looked bad-ass. Mightygodking said it best with "The action scenes are all at least decent, with points that are excellent, but… raise your hand if your favorite bit from Watchmen is an action sequence? Right. That’s what I thought."

* The ending. It wasn't so much that the ending didn't work as how the characters behaved. There was a long ass fight scene, then everything wraps up very, very abruptly.

The ending is arguably the entire point of the story, everything else is the build up to the big reveal. When I read the book, the ending felt like everyone was wallowing in grey area and I didn't have the slightest idea who to "root" for. And I didn't really feel it with the movie.

* And there's something else there that just can't put my finger on. There's some moment where the movie set off an alarm of "that's not right", but I can't figure out for the life of me what or when. It's probably going to be a Refrigerator Moment , so I'm going to have to watch the movie again, cause it's driving me crazy. Also, icon is totally for Jon's big blue penis. Just saying.

EDIT: I just realized this post sounded awfully bitchy, so I did a bit of clarifying. It still sounds pretty bitchy. :C I think I'm just trying to figure out why I'm not raving about it like I'd assumed I would. After I watch it again I hope I'll be able to give it a better review.:/
